James Archie Williams, with the encouragement, blessing, and support of his pastor. Rev. J.L. Burrell of Prohressive Baptist Church, answered a calling to the pastorate. Along with his wife Ella Mitchell Williams. Williams organized and set apart Second Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, In his home at 2314 Magnolia Street
After 60 days of worshipping in the house, they rented Bell's Hall on First Street near Saratoga Street. The congregation had increased to 15 members. The pastor appealed to the Louisiana Freedmen Missionary Baptist Association to be set apart as the Second Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
In 1921, the congregation purchased two lots on Fourth Street between Willow and Clara Streets, secured a loan from. The Singer Loan Company; and began the task of building the present edifice, which was to be dedicated with a small congregation in 1922.
Rev. Williams Died in August 1935, very soon after his death, a dynamic and eloquent young minister. Rev. Frank Johnson from Cincinnati, Ohio, visited the church. He captured the hearts of the members and was elected pastor in 1936 pastorate to be rough, tumultuous, and full of strife. He resigned early in 1939. More than half of the members followed him to an empty deserted church building on Thalia Street, where they organized the First Corinthian Baptist Church. Rev. Johnson returned to preach as a guest minister many times during his lifetime.
Rev. J. B. Barnes first visited the church during the summer of 1935. He preached his first sermon at the church that summer. On June 4, 1939, he preached his second sermon at Second Mount Calvary during the communion service. He was elected pastor on October 29, 1939. Rev. Barnes had previously served as pastor of the Oriental Baptist Church from 1935 ro 1939. He was the pastor of Second Mount Calvary for 54 years, from 1939 to 1993.
In March 1993, Rev. Alton S. Jones was introduced to the congregation by Rev. Barnes and invited him to preach the next two Sundays. On June 3, 1993, Rev. Barnes was called home by the Lord. In August 1993, Rev. Jones was elected to be pastor of the church. Rev. Jones served as pastor until his death in April 2006.
Rev. James E. Chapman, Sr, was sent by the Louisiana Missionary Baptist Association, during the summer of 2005, to conduct services because of the illness of Rev. Jones. He served as pastor from March 2006 to September 2009.
Our present pastor is Rev. Dr. Robert Myers, elected by the congregation on March 14, 2010. We are very grateful and bless to have him preaching the Word of God. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Robert Myers we were pleased to unveil the newly renovated pulpit, floor, and covered pews. The church completed work on damages from Hurricane Isaac and major repairs, renovations continued in 2014. New lighting fixtures was installed and the completion of a sound room. We give gold the glory for all the things that the Lord has blessed Second Mt. Calvary He loves his new church family and spends his time ministering to all who are in need. We pray that the Lord will continue to bless our church and our congregation.
In June 2014 Second Mt. Calvary received its 501C3 status and on January 15, 2015 the Second Mt. Calvary Community Development began its first of many projects that will be in place in the near future.
Second Mt. Calvary will continue to carry out the missions of the Baptist faith, in mission both at home and abroad, ministering to the sick and shut in.
